The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Regional Program Leader who will play a crucial role in research, partnership development and management in the East Africa region.



ILRI works with partners worldwide to enhance the roles that livestock play in food security and poverty alleviation, principally in Africa and Asia. The outcomes of these research partnerships help people in developing countries keep their farm animals’ alive and productive, increase and sustain their livestock and farm productivity, find profitable markets for their animal products, and reduce the risk of livestock-related diseases.

ILRI is a not-for-profit institution with a staff of about 700 and in 2016, an operating budget of about USD 83 million. A member of the CGIAR Consortium working for a food-secure future, ILRI has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, a principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and offices in other countries in East, West and Southern Africa and in South, Southeast and East Asia.

The position:

 The International Livestock Research Institute – ILRI, is one of the 15 not-for-profit Centers funded by various countries, private foundations, international and regional organizations that make up the CGIAR. The CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) is a strategic six-year partnership with the overall goal to catalyze positive change towards climate-smart agriculture, food systems and landscapes, and thereby contribute to CGIAR outcomes on poverty alleviation, food and nutritional security, and natural resources. CCAFS brings together strategic research in agricultural science, development research, climate science, and Earth System science, to identify and address the most important interactions, synergies and tradeoffs between climate change, agriculture and food security. CCAFS is structured around four closely inter-linked global research Flagships: Priorities and Policies for Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA); Climate-Smart Technologies and Practices; Low Emissions Development; Climate Services and Safety Nets.

As a collective effort, CCAFS will become a hub that facilitates action on climate change by all CGIAR centers, other CGIAR Research Programs and a wide range of partners while involving farmers, policy makers, donors and other stakeholders, to integrate their knowledge and needs into the tools and approaches that are developed.

The position holder will mainly be responsible for; ensuring coherence amongst CCAFS Flagships from field to regional level; play a key role in achieving outcomes and impacts at national and regional levels; lead and contribute to strategic research publications and contribute significantly to resource mobilization. He/she will link with other Regional Program Leaders and Flagship Leaders to build a coherent global program.


  • Develop and implement an engagement, partnership and communications plan for the region, taking into consideration the overarching theory of change and on-going and future activities
  • Support and promote outcomes and impact from CCAFS –funded research undertaken by partners in the region
  • Develop a pipeline of strategic CCAFS research products for the region and contribute to their publication
  • Facilitate synergies amongst partners and activities related to the effect of climate change on agriculture in the region
  • Ensure close link and support of CGIAR efforts at Site Integration, and in particular to ILRI’s leadership of Site Integration in Ethiopia
  • Contribute actively to the resource mobilization strategies of CCAFS and ILRI


  • A PhD in Agriculture or related discipline
  • Atleast 8 -10 years’ post-doctoral experience in conducting agriculture and climate change research.
  • Experience in managing / coordninating agriculture and climate change programs.
  • Evidence of the ability to foster outcomes and impacts from research and engagement
  • Experience, and ability to produce credible scientific outputs, in any of the topics that CCAFS will deal with in its science program (thus the position is open to candidates from multiple disciplines)
  • Experience in developing and implementing engagement, partnership and communications plans while building upon previously established networks in the region
  • Experience in fostering teamwork and collaborative cross-disciplinary approaches
  • A strong track record in resource mobilization.
  • Fluency in English is required; proficiency in one of regional languages is an advantage.

Post location: The position is based at Addis, Ethiopia

Position level: The position level is 5B.

Duration: 3 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
